We’re shining a light on some of the Icon portfolio companies who are incorporating Generative AI technologies into their products and services to create more compelling features and solutions for their customers and partners. First up is Quizlet, a global learning platform that provides engaging study tools to help people practice and master whatever they are learning.
Icon invested in Quizlet in 2018 with the belief that it had the potential to be one of the most valuable consumer learning companies in the world. They are well on their way with over 60 million students, teachers and everyday people using Quizlet monthly to study any subject imaginable for school, work or as part of their personal interests -- including 2 in 3 high school students and 1 in 2 college students in the US.
For years Quizlet has used and invested in AI to enhance studying and learning for students on its platform. In fact, AI and machine learning underpinned Learn Mode, which launched in 2017 and helps students learn their material faster through personalized and adaptive study experiences. In 2020, Quizlet started collaborating with OpenAI, leveraging GPT-3 across multiple use cases including vocabulary learning and practice tests.
This February, Quizlet became the first company in the education space to have access to ChatGPT's API and subsequently launched Q-Chat, the world’s first AI tutor built with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
What is Q-Chat?
Q-Chat offers students the experience of interacting with a personal AI tutor in an effective and conversational way. Whether they’re learning French vocabulary or Roman History, Q-Chat engages students with adaptive questions based on relevant study materials delivered through a fun chat experience. Pulling from Quizlet’s massive educational content library and using the question-based Socratic method to promote active learning, Q-Chat has the ability to test a student’s knowledge of educational content, ask in-depth questions to get at underlying concepts, test reading comprehension, help students learn a language and encourage students on healthy learning habits.
Our team has always been impressed with how the company uses AI to underpin their ability to provide students with better, more tailored study tools to help them with everything from learning new languages to mastering complex concepts in physics. The work they are doing with OpenAI and Chat GPT with Q-Chat is another way the company is providing its students with more compelling and engaging ways to master whatever it is they're learning.
How to start using Q-Chat
Q-Chat is available in beta for students 18+ in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and 16+ in the United States. You can find more information and join the waitlist here.
